What is pressure washing?
Pressure washing is forcing water out of a machine at high speed to clean surfaces. That’s it.
Pump pressurizes water. Water travels through a hose. You control the spray with a gun. The nozzle determines how concentrated the spray is. More pressure = more cleaning power (and more risk of damage).
How a pressure washer works
Think of water flowing through a pipe from your hose bib. Normal water pressure is low (maybe 50 PSI). A pressure washer takes water and squeezes it harder.
Step 1: Water in

- First stop: inlet where water enters the machine

PSI vs GPM
Every pressure washer has two specs. Both matter. They work differently.
PSI (pounds per square inch)
What it means: How hard the water pushes
Simple analogy: Think of it like a punch. PSI is how much force the punch has.

- 1500 PSI = Light cleaning (rinsing, soft surfaces)
- 2500 PSI = General purpose (typical residential pressure washer)
- 3000-3500 PSI = Heavy cleaning (concrete, stubborn stains)
- 4000+ PSI = Professional/commercial (rarely needed for small jobs)
Why it matters:
- Higher PSI = more cleaning power

GPM (gallons per minute)
What it means: How much water comes out per minute
Simple analogy: Think of it like speed. GPM is how fast the punch is moving.
In practice:
- 1.5-2 GPM = Light rinsing (delicate surfaces, house washing with chemicals)
- 2.5-3 GPM = General purpose (driveway, typical residential)
- 3.5-5 GPM = Heavy volume (large driveways, commercial work)
- 5+ GPM = Industrial (rarely needed)
Why it matters:
- Higher GPM = faster cleaning (covers more area per minute)
- Higher GPM = heavier machine (more to carry/move)
- GPM determines how fast you can finish a job
PSI + GPM together
The real-world equation:
PSI (force) + GPM (volume) = Cleaning Power
A machine with 2500 PSI and 2.5 GPM is very different from 2500 PSI and 4 GPM.
Example:
- 2500 PSI, 2.5 GPM = Moderate pressure, moderate volume (good for house washing with chemicals)
- 2500 PSI, 4.0 GPM = Same pressure, much higher volume (faster driveway cleaning)
- 3500 PSI, 2.5 GPM = Higher pressure, lower volume (better for stubborn stains, slower coverage)
2500 PSI with 2-3 GPM is the sweet spot. Enough power to clean driveway and siding. Low enough to be safe for most surfaces. Not so heavy you can't handle it.
Basic safety
The gun is not a toy
High-pressure water can:
- Cut skin if the nozzle is too close
- Cause serious bruising or puncture wounds
- Knock you off balance
- At close range, can cause permanent injury
Rule #1: Never point the gun at people, animals, or yourself.
Rule #2: Never spray at close range (under 2 feet) on delicate surfaces.
Rule #3: Keep hands away from the trigger when you’re not actively spraying.
Pressure can kill
The high-pressure stream is dangerous.
If the nozzle is held against skin and activated, high-pressure water can inject under the skin. This is a medical emergency requiring immediate hospital care. Prevention: Never point at people. Ever.
Basic PPE (personal protective equipment)
Minimum:
- Closed-toe shoes (water and spray everywhere)
- Eye protection (splashing debris)
- Gloves (cold water, chemicals, irritation)

- Switch to green nozzle (25° angle)

Common beginner mistakes
Mistake #1: Standing too close
Result: Damage to surface, pressure marks, splashing
Fix: Start at 4 feet. Move closer only after testing.
Mistake #2: Using red nozzle right away
Result: Holes in siding, splintered wood, ruined surfaces
Fix: Red is for concrete only. White and green for everything else at first.
Mistake #3: Holding in one spot
Result: Etching, pressure marks, uneven cleaning
Fix: Keep moving. Continuous motion, overlapping passes.
Mistake #4: Not testing first
Result: Finding out your mistake too late (damage is done)
Fix: Every surface is different. Always test on hidden area first.
Mistake #5: Assuming machine is off when not in hand

Water source matters
Do NOT use:
- Well water (can have sediment that damages pump)
- Recycled/reclaimed water (contaminants damage pump)
- Cold water in extreme cold (can damage pump)
Use:
- Municipal water (treated, clean)
- Reasonably warm or room-temperature water
- Filter if available (protects pump)
First job tips
Keep it simple:
- Start with a small job (one room, small driveway section)
- Pick a forgiving surface (concrete, not wood or vinyl)
- Do it when someone experienced can watch (if possible)
- Go slow, not fast
Expected time: What you think will take 2 hours will take 4. That’s normal while learning.
