Distance: 2-3 feet from surface typical

My recommendation for beginners: Start with green. It’s forgiving, covers area quickly, and is difficult to cause damage with.


White nozzle (40 degrees)

What it is:

  • 40-degree angle
  • Wide spray pattern
  • Gentle force on surface
  • At 3000 PSI, white = ~400 PSI equivalent force

When to use:

  • Vinyl siding (main use)
  • Painted wood siding
  • Stucco (with low PSI)
  • Roof cleaning (with low PSI + chemicals)
  • Final rinsing (after higher-pressure work)
  • Tender surfaces (new paint, delicate finishes)

Distance: 3-4 feet from surface typical

Why white for vinyl: At 40°, even at 2500 PSI, it rarely damages vinyl. Safe choice for most house washing.


Black nozzle (40 degrees or wider)

What it is:

  • Wide angle (40-90+ degrees)
  • Very soft, wide spray
  • Minimal force on surface
  • At 3000 PSI, black = ~200 PSI equivalent force
  • Some black nozzles are extremely wide (near garden hose gentle)

When to use:

  • Rinsing (final pass after cleaning)
  • Garden and landscaping areas (won't blast plants)
  • Pre-wetting surfaces before chemical application
  • Delicate areas (new seeding, tender plants)
  • Gentle downward rinsing on roof (low damage risk)

Distance: Can get close (1-2 feet) — wide angle means less risk

Real-world use: Black is invaluable for safely wetting the landscape without blasting it to pieces.


Orifice sizing (for nerds)

Nozzles are also sized by orifice (the tiny hole where water exits). Common sizes: 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 mm.

What it means:

  • Larger orifice = more water volume at same PSI
  • Smaller orifice = less water but more concentrated pressure

Practical translation:

  • 2.0-2.5 mm: For 2000-2500 PSI machines (residential)
  • 3.0-3.5 mm: For 3000-3500 PSI machines (professional)
  • 4.0 mm: For higher flow/commercial machines

Beginner’s note: Don’t overthink this. Your machine came with appropriate nozzles. Use them. If you need replacements, match the color code to your current nozzle.


The golden rule: test before you use

Every Surface Is Different

Test on a small, hidden area first. Hold nozzle at working distance. Spray for 2-3 seconds. Back up 1 foot and spray again. Watch the results. Only then commit to the full surface.

What you’re testing for:

  • Does it damage the surface? (paint stripping, gouging, discoloration)
  • Does it require closer distance or backing up?
  • Does color/finish look right after?
  • Any unexpected reactions (paint bubbling, sealant damage, dust pattern)?

Example test protocol:

  1. Start with white nozzle at 3 feet (safest choice)
  2. Spray test area for 2 seconds
  3. Step back, assess
  4. If safe and effective, proceed with full surface
  5. If not effective, switch to yellow at 2 feet and test again
  6. If too aggressive, switch to black at 2 feet

Common mistakes beginners make

Mistake #1: Using red on house siding

Result: Holes in vinyl, splintered wood, ruined paint

Fix: Red is for concrete only. Keep it away from the house. Period.


Mistake #2: Using one nozzle for everything

Reality: Different surfaces need different angles

Fix: Carry green, white, and black. Green for concrete, white for siding, black for rinsing. You’re done.


Mistake #3: Holding nozzle too close

Reality: Closer = higher force (force increases exponentially with distance reduction)

Result: Damage, tears in siding, pattern marks on concrete

Fix: Start at 4 feet. Move closer only after testing. Respect the distance.
