Why Winterization Matters
Pressure washing equipment is vulnerable to freezing temperatures. Water left in the pump, hoses, or plumbing will expand as it freezes, cracking metal, plastic, and seals. A single winter without proper winterization can cause $1,000–$5,000 in damage.
Winterization takes 1–2 hours and costs $30–$80 in materials (antifreeze, fuel stabilizer). It’s the cheapest insurance you can buy.
The Winterization Timeline
Best Time: As soon as daily temperatures drop below 50°F consistently (late October to November in most regions). Don’t wait—freeze damage can occur unexpectedly.
Worst Mistake: Leaving equipment unprotected and hoping for the best. Freeze damage happens overnight.
Pump Antifreeze Protection
Preparing the Pump for Shutdown
Step 1: Drain the System
- Run the pressure washer for 5–10 minutes with fresh water to clear any chemical residue
- Stop the engine and let it cool (5 minutes)
- Locate the pump drain plug (usually at the lowest point on the pump body)
- Place a bucket underneath and remove the plug
- Let water drain completely (takes 2–5 minutes)
- Wipe the drain area dry
Step 2: Add RV/Marine Antifreeze
- Replace the drain plug
- Locate the pump inlet (where fresh water enters from the tank)
- Disconnect the suction line from the pump
- Place a funnel in the pump inlet opening
- Slowly pour RV-grade antifreeze (NOT automotive antifreeze; it’s toxic) into the funnel
- Allow 1–2 quarts to flow through the pump and discharge
Antifreeze works by lowering the freezing point of water. A 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water freezes at -34°F, safe for most winter conditions.
Step 3: Run Antifreeze Through the System
- Reconnect the suction line (place the end in a bucket of antifreeze)
- Start the engine and run it for 1–2 minutes at low idle
- This pulls antifreeze through the entire pump, seals, and discharge plumbing
- Stop the engine
Antifreeze Quantity:
- Small residential pump (2–3 GPM): 2–3 quarts
- Prosumer pump (3.5–4 GPM): 3–5 quarts
- Professional pump (5+ GPM): 5–8 quarts
Pro Tip: Use the same antifreeze for all equipment (hoses, injectors, pressure washer) for consistency.
Use RV/Marine-grade propylene glycol antifreeze only. This is non-toxic and safe around plumbing. Never use automotive ethylene glycol antifreeze—it's toxic, can corrode metal components, and is harmful to the environment. Check the bottle label; it must say "RV/Marine" and "Non-Toxic."
Hose Winterization
Hoses hold water and freeze easily. Proper storage prevents cracks and leaks.
High-Pressure Discharge Hoses
- Drain thoroughly: Disconnect one end and hold it vertically, allowing water to drain completely (takes 10–30 minutes for a 200-foot hose)
- Blow it out (optional): If you have access to compressed air, use 30 PSI to force remaining water out of the hose
- Coil loosely: Never kink or bend tightly; coil in large circles (3–4 feet diameter) to prevent internal stress
- Store vertically: Hang the coiled hose on a reel or nail so any remaining water can drain toward the ends (not trapped in the middle)
- Add antifreeze (professional rigs only): For commercial high-pressure rigs, flush antifreeze through the discharge hose as a backup protection
Suction/Chemical Hoses
These require extra care because they’re prone to kinking and water entrapment.
- Remove from the rig: Disconnect from the pump inlet and tank
- Drain and blow dry: Use compressed air to clear water
- Coil loosely: Lay in large loops, not tight coils
- Hang the middle (critical): Support the hose at its center so both ends point downward; trapped water will migrate toward the ends and drain out
- Cover: Wrap in a tarp or bag to keep out dust
Suction lines left kinked over winter often don’t function properly in spring; water inside freezes and blocks flow.
Quick-Disconnect Couplers
- Separate the male and female ends
- Drain any water from the cavity
- Wipe each fitting dry with a cloth
- Store apart in a dry bag
Corrosion on coupling seals causes leaks in spring; keeping them dry prevents this.
Chemical System Winterization
Downstream Injectors
- Run neutralizer solution through the injector: Fill your chemical tank with a 50/50 mix of water and baking soda (mild alkaline solution)
- Activate the injector: Run the pressure washer for 2–3 minutes to pull the neutralizer through
- Flush with antifreeze: Replace the baking soda solution with RV antifreeze and run again for 1 minute
- Disconnect the suction line: Store it coiled and drained (see hose section above)
- Leave the injector body empty: Don’t seal it with water or chemical inside; let it dry
Chemical Storage Tanks
- Empty completely: Drain all remaining chemical or water

Engine Winterization
Fuel Stabilization
Gasoline breaks down over months of storage, forming gums that clog fuel injectors and carburetors. Fuel stabilizer prevents this.
Process:
- Add fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank per product instructions (typically 1 oz per 5 gallons)
- Run the engine for 10–15 minutes at medium throttle to circulate the stabilized fuel
- Let it cool
- For equipment in storage over 6 months, consider completely draining the fuel tank and carb
Fuel Stabilizer Options:
- Sta-Bil ($8–$15): Industry standard, widely available
- TechRoil PRI-G ($25–$40): Professional-grade, better for long-term storage (12+ months)
- Carb-X ($10–$20): Specifically targets carburetor gunk buildup
Oil Change
- Change the oil before storage if it’s due (check engine manual for intervals)
- Run the engine for 5 minutes to warm the new oil
- Fresh oil protects the engine during dormancy; old oil contains acids that corrode bearings
Fresh, clean oil is the single best protection against engine corrosion during winter.
Spark Plug Care
- Inspect the spark plug (pull it out and examine)
- Light tan/brown = normal, store as-is
- Black/fouled = clean or replace before storing
- Apply a small amount of light oil to the spark plug threads (prevents corrosion)
- Loosely reinstall or store separately in a dry bag
Some old advice suggests draining the crankcase for winter storage. Modern oils are robust; don't do this. Oil residue helps prevent rust. Change oil, add fresh stabilized fuel, and call it done.
Carburetor Preservation
For Small Gas Engines (Under 5 HP):
Most small engine issues in spring are carb-related (gummy fuel, deposits). Two options:
Option 1 – Fuel Stabilizer Method (easier):
- Add fuel stabilizer, run engine for 15 minutes
- This is adequate for 3–4 month storage
- If storing longer, drain fuel and carb
Option 2 – Complete Carburetor Drain (more thorough):
- Locate the fuel shutoff valve (bottom of fuel tank)
- Close it
- Run the engine until it dies (consuming remaining fuel in the carb)
- Wait 5 minutes
- Open the carb drain screw (if present) and let any remaining fuel drip out
- Leave the drain screw open slightly overnight
- Close the drain screw and seal the fuel cap
This ensures the carb is truly empty; no residue to harden.
Equipment Storage Setup
Temperature and Humidity
Ideal Storage:
- Unheated garage, shed, or building (35–50°F)
- Low humidity (below 60%)
- Out of direct sunlight
- Protected from rodents and pests
Why Not Heated: A heated garage creates condensation when cold equipment is brought in; water collects on metal parts and causes rust. Unheated is better.
Trailer/Rig Storage
- Park on level ground: Sloped ground causes fluid to settle unevenly in tanks
- Check tire pressure: Underinflated tires can develop flat spots over months. Inflate to 110% of normal; let air out before spring
- Apply rust preventative: Spray WD-40 or similar on all bare metal (nuts, bolts, hitch)
- Cover the rig: Use a heavy tarp to keep dust and moisture off
- Chock the wheels: Place wheel blocks behind the wheels to prevent any movement
Individual Equipment Protection
- Cover with tarp or equipment cover (dust protection)

- Check engine oil (dipstick should show full)
- Verify fuel level and condition (old fuel should be replaced if it’s been sitting over 6 months)
- Inspect spark plug (should be clean and light-colored)
- Check all bolts and fasteners (vibration over winter may have loosened them)
First Start
- Prime the pump (if applicable): Most modern pumps self-prime, but manually pump a bit of water through by hand if possible
- Start at low throttle and let it idle for 2–3 minutes
- Apply water load: Run at low pressure first; let the system warm up
- Listen for unusual noises: Grinding, rattling, or metal-on-metal sounds indicate problems
- Check for leaks: Any drips that persist after 5 minutes of operation need attention

Post-Winter Service Items
If equipment won’t start or performs poorly:
