Choosing the Right Pressure Washing Nozzle
Guide to selecting the correct pressure washing nozzle — degree angles, orifice sizing, color coding, when to use each, and matching nozzles to surfaces.
Nozzle Basics: Degree Angles
A nozzle’s degree rating describes the spray fan width it produces. Lower degree angles concentrate pressure into a smaller area (higher PSI at the surface), while higher degree angles spread pressure over a larger area (lower PSI at the surface).
Standard Nozzle Angles:
- 0° (Red) — Pin-point jet, extremely concentrated, 1–2 inches wide at 1 foot distance
- 15° (Yellow) — Narrow fan, high pressure concentration, 3–4 inches wide
- 25° (Green) — Medium fan, balanced cutting and coverage, 6–8 inches wide
- 40° (White) — Wide fan, gentle pressure, 12–16 inches wide
- 65° (Black) — Extra-wide fan, rinse and low-pressure cleaning, 18–24 inches wide
A 0° nozzle concentrates all pump output into a tiny jet, creating extreme pressure at point of contact. A 65° nozzle spreads the same water volume over a much wider area, reducing surface PSI. You cannot increase total pressure by changing nozzles—only how that pressure is distributed.
Understanding Orifice Size
The orifice is the tiny opening inside the nozzle that water flows through. Orifice size directly affects how much water (GPM) can flow through the nozzle.
Common Orifice Sizes by GPM:
- 2.0 GPM: 0.04” orifice (written as “04”)
- 3.0 GPM: 0.05” orifice (“05”)
- 4.0 GPM: 0.06” orifice (“06”)
- 5.0 GPM: 0.07” orifice (“07”)
- 8.0 GPM: 0.10” orifice (“10”)
A nozzle’s GPM rating must match your pump. If your pump outputs 4 GPM but you use a 2 GPM nozzle, water backs up in the gun, creating excessive pressure spikes and pump strain. Conversely, a 5 GPM nozzle on a 4 GPM pump will not achieve rated pressure.
Always prioritize matching orifice size to your pump's GPM output. Degree selection is secondary—you can clean almost anything with the right degree at your pump's flow rate, but mismatching GPM causes equipment damage.
The Color Coding System
Professional pressure washers use standardized color coding for quick identification:

Many professional kits include red, yellow, green, and white nozzles so operators can switch based on the job.
Selecting by Surface Type
Concrete/Asphalt:
- 0°–15° for heavy buildup and stains
- 25° for general driveway cleaning
- 40° if the surface is relatively clean
Start with 25°, move to 15° only if stains persist after a full pass.
Wood Decks/Fences:
- 40° minimum to avoid splintering and fiber damage
- Many professionals use 40° exclusively on wood
- 65° if the deck is newer or in good condition
Never use 0° or 15° on wood—you’ll create splinters and erode the grain.
Vinyl Siding/Stucco:
- 25°–40° depending on how dirty
- Start at 40° and downgrade only if results are inadequate
- Maintain 12–18 inches of distance
0° and 15° can force water behind siding or crack/scar stucco.
Roof Cleaning:
- Typically 40° or 65° to avoid shingle damage
- Many roofers use low pressure (under 1500 PSI) with 65° nozzles
- Some prefer 25° with proper distance control
Check the roof material (asphalt vs. metal vs. tile) before deciding.
Vehicles/Equipment:
- 40° for painted surfaces
- 25° if heavy mud or grime requires more aggressive cleaning
- Never 0° or 15° on paint—risk of swirl marks and clear coat damage
Windows/Glass:
- 40° or 65° only
- Maintain distance; water can force into frames
- Use low pressure (under 1200 PSI) if available
Distance and Pressure Balance
Nozzle selection isn’t just about degree—distance from the surface matters equally.
A 40° nozzle at 6 inches away delivers more concentrated pressure than a 25° nozzle at 24 inches away. Operators adjust cleaning power by:
- Changing nozzle degree
- Adjusting distance
- Controlling trigger
Safe Operating Distances by Degree:
- 0°: 12–18 inches (testing first)
- 15°: 18–24 inches
- 25°: 24–36 inches
- 40°: 36–48 inches
- 65°: 48+ inches (or closer if pure rinsing)
If you’re closer than safe distance with a given nozzle, switch to a higher degree instead.
A 0° nozzle can cut skin or bore holes in surfaces at close range. Never point a red nozzle at people, pets, or fragile materials. Always test a small area first, and never let a 0° nozzle get within 6 inches of the surface being cleaned.
Nozzle Wear and Replacement
Over time, nozzle orifices enlarge from erosion, increasing the effective GPM flow slightly. A worn 4 GPM nozzle may flow 4.3 GPM, throwing off pressure balance.
Signs of a Worn Nozzle:
- Spray pattern becomes uneven or drips
- Pressure feels slightly lower than before
- Orifice opening is visibly larger (compare to a new nozzle of the same size)
Replacement Interval:
- Commercial daily-use rigs: Every 3–6 months
- Prosumer seasonal use: Annually
- Homeowner occasional use: Every 2–3 years or as needed
Quality stainless steel or ceramic nozzles last longer than brass.
Bringing the Right Nozzles to a Job
Professional operators carry:
- One red (0°) nozzle for testing and heavy cutting
- Two yellow (15°) nozzles as backups (they wear quickly)
- Three green (25°) nozzles (the most-used workhorse)
- Two white (40°) nozzles for delicate work
- One black (65°) nozzle for final rinse
This setup ensures you can handle any surface and have backups if a nozzle becomes damaged mid-job.
First: Match orifice to pump GPM. Second: Choose degree based on surface type and condition. Third: Test on an inconspicuous area. Fourth: Adjust distance and trigger control to dial in the perfect cleaning power. Carry a variety of nozzles on every job—being able to adapt prevents damage and produces better results.
