Acid Washing Techniques for Pressure Washing

Acid washing is one of the most effective, and most potentially dangerous, chemical cleaning methods in pressure washing. Used correctly, acids dissolve mineral deposits, rust, efflorescence, and concrete stains that no amount of water pressure alone will touch. Used carelessly, they burn skin, damage substrate, harm landscaping, and create serious environmental violations.
This guide covers the three acids you’ll use professionally, when to use each, proper dilution, application methods, and the neutralization steps that separate professionals from amateurs.
The Three Workhorse Acids
Muriatic Acid (Hydrochloric Acid)
Muriatic acid (technically hydrochloric acid, HCl) is the most aggressive and the most commonly used acid in pressure washing. Pool supply stores sell it at roughly 30–35% concentration. On the job, you dilute it further.
What it does best: Dissolves rust stains on concrete, removes efflorescence (the white chalky bloom on new concrete), strips mortar from brick, removes hard water deposits, and etches concrete surfaces for better coating adhesion.
Dilution ratio: Start at 1 part acid to 10 parts water for general concrete cleaning. For aggressive rust or heavy efflorescence, 1:8. For light work or when you’re unsure, go weaker (1:15). Always dilute acid into water, never water into acid—this prevents violent spattering.
Dwell time: Muriatic acid works fast. Typically 5–15 minutes is enough. Longer contact times don’t necessarily mean better results and increase risk of over-etching.
Neutralization: Critical. After rinsing, apply a base (like sodium bicarbonate solution or commercial acid neutralizer) to raise pH back to neutral. Test with pH strips. Without neutralization, the surface remains acidic and can affect any coating you apply later.
Phosphoric Acid
Phosphoric acid is weaker than muriatic acid but gentler on surrounding materials. You’ll find it in rust removal products and some concrete cleaners sold under various brands. Typical concentrate is 10–20%.
What it does best: Removing rust from metal surfaces (tools, gates, railings), light rust stains on concrete, mild efflorescence, and situations where you need gentler action on masonry.
Dilution ratio: Typically 1:3 to 1:5 depending on product concentration and severity. Follow the product label—phosphoric acid products are often pre-formulated for specific applications.
Dwell time: 10–30 minutes. Phosphoric acid is slower acting than muriatic but gives you more control and less risk of aggressive over-etching.
Neutralization: Still needed, but less aggressive. pH strips will confirm when neutralization is complete.
Oxalic Acid
Oxalic acid is the gentlest of the three and increasingly popular because it’s both effective and safer. Found naturally in rhubarb and coffee, it’s sold as a powder (dissolve it in water) or in pre-mixed solutions. Concentrations vary by product.
What it does best: Removing rust stains (especially from weathering of rebar in concrete), rust stains on wood, tannin stains, and light efflorescence. Excellent for wood restoration work.
Dilution ratio: Typically 1–2 pounds of powder per gallon of water, or follow product instructions. It dissolves slowly—stir well and let sit a few minutes.
Dwell time: 15–60 minutes. Oxalic acid works gradually. You’re not in a hurry, which means fewer accidents.
Neutralization: Still required, but oxalic acid is less aggressive, so neutralization is simpler. Some contractors finish with plain water rinse for light applications, though a proper pH check is safer.
Application Methods
Spray application: Mix your diluted acid in a pump sprayer or apply through a proportioner on your pressure system. Spray thoroughly until the surface glistens—don’t leave dry spots. Wet from bottom up to prevent acid from running down onto untreated areas below and concentrate on problem spots.
Immersion or poultice: For smaller items or wood decks with deep stains, you can soak or apply acid-soaked rags. Hold a damp cloth of acid solution against the stain for 10–20 minutes to let the acid penetrate deeply.
Soft wash application: Mix acid into your soft wash tank and apply at low pressure or with coil. Let the dwell time do the work before rinsing with lower pressure.
Always wet the surface with plain water first before applying acid. This prevents acid from penetrating too fast into the substrate and gives you more control over dwell time. Dry concrete drinks acid immediately—wet concrete absorbs it slowly and evenly.

Neutralization: The Step Professionals Don’t Skip
After your dwell time and rinse, the surface is still acidic. This causes problems:
- Coatings won’t adhere properly
- Residual acid continues etching
- pH-sensitive materials continue degrading
Neutralization steps:
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove loose acid residue
- Mix a base solution: sodium bicarbonate (baking soda, ~1 lb per 5 gallons of water) or commercial acid neutralizer
- Spray or apply the base solution generously—you want visible fizzing/bubbling (this is neutralization happening)
- Let it dwell 10 minutes
- Final rinse with clean water
- Test with pH strips—aim for neutral (pH 6–8)
- PPE always: Acid-resistant gloves (nitrile won't cut it—use chemical-resistant), face shield, apron, closed-toe boots. Acid splashing into eyes is an emergency.
- Never dilute backwards: Water into acid creates violent boiling and spattering. Always acid into water.
- Ventilation: Muriatic acid produces HCl gas vapor. Work outdoors. Indoors, ensure strong ventilation (even then, consider respiratory protection).
- First aid on site: Keep water and baking soda (for skin) readily accessible. For eye exposure, flush with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention immediately.
- Containment: Acid will etch concrete and damage grass. Use tarps, berms, or containment mats. Capture and neutralize runoff.
When to Use Each Acid
Use muriatic acid for concrete restoration, new concrete cleaning (removing form release), brick cleaning, heavy efflorescence, and aggressive rust stain removal.
Use phosphoric acid when muriatic is overkill, for rust on metal, on delicate masonry, or when you’re cleaning surfaces sensitive to aggressive acids.
Use oxalic acid for wood restoration, light rust stains, tannin stains, and situations where safety and environmental friendliness matter most.
If the stain is paint, tar, adhesive, or organic growth (algae, mold), acid won't help. Don't default to acid for every brown stain—get the diagnosis right first. Iron oxide stains (rust) respond to acid. Organic stains respond to oxidizing cleaners or biodegradable degreasers.
The Damage You Can Do
Acid etches concrete. This is sometimes desired (to prepare a surface for coating) but often not. Over-dilution and/or long dwell times can leave the surface porous, pitted, and vulnerable. Under-dilution can create dark streaks and uneven etching.
On wood, acid can raise grain excessively and darken the surface. Always test on an inconspicuous area.
On brass, copper, and some metals, strong acid can cause unwanted patina changes.
On landscaping, acid runoff is a plant killer. Protect everything.
Before full application, spray a small inconspicuous test area (2 feet by 2 feet) with your diluted acid. Observe for 30 seconds, let it dwell for your planned time, rinse, and inspect. This takes 10 minutes and prevents disasters. Professional work always includes a test spot.
Compliance Reminder
Some states restrict muriatic acid in certain applications or require special licensing. Always check local regulations. Environmental compliance around acid runoff is non-negotiable—capture it, neutralize it, and dispose of it properly (not into storm drains).
